November 2008 - mARTinipalooza - a martini tasting party and art auction benefiting the American Red Cross. An extremely fun night of tasting exotic and unusual sample sized portions of martinis – this event has very limited seating, lending to its intimate and upscale atmosphere. All checks are to be made out to the Wiregrass Chapter of the American Red Cross, a 501 ( c)(3) not for Profit- proceeds stay in our community for local victims of house fires and other disasters.

December 4-6, 2008 - Downtown Christmas Celebration - Various downtown events including a the Christmas tree lighting, holiday spectacular show at the historic Opera House and street fair complete with vendors, entertainment, snow zone, dog fashion show, and much more. (All proceeds benefit The Downtown Group, a 501 C (3) non-profit.) Last year’s attendance at the street festival was between 9,000 and 10,000, and admission is free for the tree lighting and festival (nominal admission fee for the Holiday Spectacular.)

January 29 & 30, 2009 - Antiques Extravaganza – This annual antique appraisal fair, sale and auction is a benefit for the Wiregrass Chapter of the American Red Cross. Sponsorships may be tax-deductible to this 501 (c ) (3) not for profit. Hundreds of people will bring their family heirlooms to be inspected by expert appraisers to determine if their antiques are trash or treasure, and hundreds more watch to see what surprises unfold. In the 2008 show, a woman brought in an old family item, passed down through generations, that was later determined to be worth a half-million dollars!

May 9, 2009 Yellawood Johnny Johnny Mack Brown Festival. This event increased its attendance by nearly 1000% between 2007 and 2008 with the addition of certain western and equestrian elements. New for 2008 were the Cowboy Arena where horses and their handlers showcased roping, riding and shooting techniques, and a children’s themed section. Over 900 school kids came out on Friday last year, and several hundred more attended on Saturday with their families.

Inductees’ accomplishments are enshrined with a permanent memorial on display in the lobby of the Dothan Civic Center. July 4, 2009- Family 4th Celebration- Dothan’s biggest one-day event! Each of the past two years the festival has drawn over 10,000 people to celebrate the 4th of July. The car show attracted over 140 cars, and there were 20 bands on 3 different stages in 2008. Hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Dothan, all proceeds from the event are given back to the community through charitable contributions to childrens’ charities and programs.
